Dante’s work prominently contributed in creating the fundamental features of European ethos, especially by highlighting the duty of supporting humanity’s progress through knowledge and action. The way of knowledge shows Dante’s true and innovative universalism, which considers humanity’s common duty to make the intellect progress. Regarding action, Dante believes that knowledge must be completed: you must not only think, but act “to profit the misguided world” (Purgatory, Canto 32, n.d.t.). In order to emphasize this aspect, Dante subverts the usual hierarchy of sciences by placing in first place the Moralis Philosophia. This architectural not ontological primacy of practical reason is still valid today and urges to be fulfilled to avoid the atomistic fragmentation of knowledge and practice. Finally, it is remarkable that Dante chooses as an example the “pagan” Ca-to: this allows us to focus on the issue of laity and on Dante’s complex humanism, which presents strong dissonances with present feeling.
