The paper tries to illuminate the connections between sexuality and violence against women. After a short description of the phenomenon, it focuses on power dynamics within intimate relationships, where violence against women is most common and pervasive. By comparing studies from the 1990s with the most recent academic production, the paper explores the ancient roots and recent manifestations of male violence within couple relationships. The last part focuses on the present cultural configuration, noting the oscillation, in younger generations, between the myth of romantic love and a symbiotic relationship, and that of sexual freedom and narcissism in affections. The paper highlights the risks for young males, who are exposed to two cultural myths in particular: the postmodern illusion of a limitless desire, at the origin of many of their anxieties, and the ancient myth of male sexual power as confirmation of their identity.
